Shi Pei Pu
Shi Pei Pu, who died in Paris on June 30 aged 70, was a Chinese opera singer whose name would have remained obscure to the world were it not for his starring role in one of the most bizarre espionage cases of the last century.
n the 1960s Shi (pronounced "Shuh") embarked on a prolonged affair with Bernard Boursicot, a junior French diplomat posted to Beijing. Shi was a man, and lived as such, but told Boursicot that he had been born female and brought up by his mother as a boy.
