This comes at a most inconvenient moment for the French. They have their own problems of national identity. They also have their own very secular relations with religion in general.
What is most irritating in general in Europe is that anyone can knock the Christian religions, in particular the Catholic Church, but one cannot touch Jews and Moslems.

Not only is there the question of French identity but there is that of a European identity as well. It seems whenever the people of Europe vote in a referendum, be they Irish or Swiss or French for that matter, and the politicians don't agree, there is uproar on the part of those politicians.
